Self-determination is the ability to make choices and manage your own life. For a long time, this human right has been denied to Aboriginal people.
Reconciliation requires allies to support and amplify Aboriginal voices and solutions. Aboriginal-led organisations and activities strengthen the whole community.
Gunawirra is an Aboriginal-led and governed charity that connects preschool children, mothers and communities to the services they need, when they need it. Culture is at the heart of our services because it is vital to help our mob heal and build confidence.
We make lasting change because:
- Our team has strong, long-term relationships with Aboriginal preschools in regional NSW
- Our team is diverse and collaborative to support the unique needs of our people e.g. social workers, speech therapists, art therapists, occupational therapists and nutritionists
- Our team are trained in culture and have expertise in intergenerational trauma.
Help the next generation of young Aboriginal children have the best chance at healing. Please donate now!
Who is Gunawirra?
We are a small team of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people working side-by-side to support children, families and communities to reach their full potential. Culture is at the heart of our organisation and all of our programs.
Today, Gunawirra supports over 1500 Aboriginal families across 26 preschools in regional NSW with culture, speech therapy, art therapy, nutrition, women’s business and care packs, books and toys.
Our cultural advisors and professionals work together to ensure we provide community-led services that celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and healing.
Uncle John Kelly shares about his grandchildren’s experience with Speech Therapy services.
“I have grandchildren at the Dalaigur Preschool and when they first entered school, they were unable to speak or understand. In just a few weeks my grandchildren were speaking to me, and they were much happier”
