Many qualified teachers experience burn-out when working in classrooms where children hold intergenerational trauma. There is a need in many of the schools we work with for teachers to better understand trauma, self care and appropriate ways of sharing culture with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
The Teacher Training program develops an understanding of the relationship between culture, identity and healing so they can better support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who may have experienced trauma. The program covers values, beliefs, history, traditional ways of life and healing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
“Gunawirra became aware as soon as we started working with preschools, that there was a lack of support and knowledge available for teachers about trauma and how to cope with trauma in the classroom. Teachers appeared to be burnt out and struggling within themselves. Gunawirra immediately set about working together with teachers, their community, and their elders to share knowledge about trauma and to help with their own self care and to share culture as the means to provide healing.”
